DISCOVER THE WILD SIDE OF UGANDA AT PIAN UPE WILDLIFE RESERVE
For travellers looking beyond Uganda’s famous national parks, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve offers something special: space, silence, adventure and the feeling of discovering a destination that remains largely untouched. Located in eastern Uganda on the edge of the Karamoja region, Pian Upe is an excellent choice for travellers who want a less crowded and more authentic wildlife experience.
Established in 1964, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve covers approximately 231,400 hectares of open savannah, wooded grasslands, rocky hills and seasonal watercourses. Its dramatic wilderness stretches beneath the surrounding highlands, including Mount Kadam, creating beautiful scenery for wildlife viewing and photography.
WHY VISIT PIAN UPE WILDLIFE RESERVE?
Unlike Uganda’s busier safari destinations, Pian Upe still feels remote and unexplored. Here, a game drive can take you across wide open plains without long lines of safari vehicles. It is a destination for travellers who appreciate wilderness, photography, wildlife tracking and the excitement of exploring somewhere different.
Uganda Wildlife Authority highlights Pian Upe as a destination for game drives, birdwatching, nature walks and cultural interactions with communities neighbouring the reserve. This combination makes it suitable for adventurous travellers, photographers, bird lovers and anyone looking to experience another side of Uganda.
WILDLIFE IN PIAN UPE
Pian Upe supports an impressive variety of wildlife. Visitors may encounter giraffes, roan antelopes, elands, zebras, Jackson’s hartebeests, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, mountain reedbucks, oribis and buffaloes.
The reserve is also associated with predators including cheetahs and leopards, although wildlife sightings in a natural reserve can never be guaranteed. Part of the adventure is exploring the plains with an experienced guide and searching for animals in their natural environment. UWA also records species including giraffe, roan antelope, eland, zebra and a variety of other plains wildlife within the reserve.
Pian Upe has also been part of important wildlife restoration efforts. Giraffes were reintroduced to the reserve as part of conservation work aimed at rebuilding wildlife populations and restoring the ecosystem.
A PARADISE FOR BIRD LOVERS
Birdwatchers have another reason to put Pian Upe on their Uganda itinerary. The reserve and surrounding landscapes support an interesting mixture of savannah and dry-country birds.
Among the notable birds associated with the reserve are ostriches and secretary birds. Exploring Pian Upe early in the morning can be particularly rewarding, when temperatures are cooler and bird activity is high.
GAME DRIVES ACROSS THE OPEN PLAINS
A game drive is one of the best ways to experience Pian Upe. The open landscapes provide beautiful views across the reserve and opportunities to search for giraffes, antelopes and other wildlife.
The experience is quite different from a conventional safari in one of Uganda’s more developed national parks. Pian Upe remains rugged, and some tracks can be rough, making a capable 4×4 safari vehicle highly recommended.
That raw character is part of Pian Upe’s attraction. Every drive feels like an expedition into a wilderness that relatively few travellers have experienced.
NATURE WALKS AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES
Pian Upe is not only about viewing wildlife from a vehicle. Guided nature walks offer visitors an opportunity to explore the landscape more closely while learning about tracks, plants, birds and the wider ecosystem.
Travellers can also include respectful cultural experiences with communities living around the reserve. These encounters can provide a deeper understanding of life in the Karamoja region and the relationship between communities, wildlife and conservation. UWA currently lists nature walks and cultural interactions among the experiences available at Pian Upe.
BEST TIME TO VISIT PIAN UPE
Pian Upe can be explored at different times of the year, but the drier periods generally provide easier conditions for first-time visitors. Current visitor information recommends December to March and June to September as good dry-season windows. During these periods, tracks are generally easier to navigate, vegetation may be shorter and wildlife can become easier to locate around available water sources.
The wetter months bring a different experience. The landscape becomes greener and can be excellent for scenery, photography and birdwatching, although some tracks may become muddy or difficult to access.
GETTING TO PIAN UPE
Pian Upe fits naturally into an eastern Uganda safari. Travellers coming from Kampala normally travel east through Jinja and Mbale before continuing north towards the reserve.
From Mbale, Pian Upe is approximately 90 kilometres away, making it possible to combine the reserve with other attractions in eastern Uganda. It can also form part of a longer adventure linking Sipi Falls, Pian Upe and Kidepo Valley National Park. Current visitor information estimates the journey from Kampala at roughly seven to eight hours depending on road conditions and stops.
This makes Pian Upe especially attractive for travellers who want to create a safari route through some of Uganda’s less explored eastern and northeastern landscapes.
WHERE TO STAY
Accommodation around Pian Upe is simpler than what travellers may find in Uganda’s major national parks, which adds to the reserve’s adventurous character. UWA accommodation and camping options are available, while additional accommodation can be arranged around the surrounding areas depending on your itinerary.
Because accommodation choices are limited, it is advisable to plan and reserve your stay in advance, particularly when travelling as a family or when you require self-contained accommodation.
WHAT TO PACK FOR A PIAN UPE SAFARI
Bring comfortable lightweight clothing, closed walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and enough drinking water. Binoculars are highly recommended for wildlife and birdwatching, while photographers should bring suitable camera equipment and spare batteries.
Early mornings and evenings can feel cooler than the heat of the day, so carrying a light jacket is useful. Most importantly, travel with an adventurous mindset. Pian Upe is about experiencing nature in a place that has not been heavily commercialised.
